Cleaning And Remediating Fire Damage To Columbus Homes
Columbus residents can handle everything this winter can throw at them. Soon, ice and snow are as common as grass in the springtime. Even in the middle of a snowstorm or freezing temperatures, a fire can still strike home. Faulty wiring in holiday decorations can cause a tree to go up in flames just like window curtains in a kitchen fire.
Some fire damage to homes in Columbus can be difficult to clean, and regular methods are not an option. In these cases, SERVPRO restoration teams use special cleaners and methods to return the items to their original condition.
Certain porous materials such as curtains and other fabrics are too fragile to use normal cleaners. In some cases, a simple agitation tool like a brush can cause further damage to drapes already heavily soiled by smoke and soot. To eliminate these soils without tearing the material or leaving water and cleaner marks, restoration technicians use absorbent powders.
They cover the item with a layer of powder and allow it to absorb the smoke and soot residues slowly. After allowing enough time to work, SERVPRO team members wipe down the surface with dry sponges to remove the absorbed residue and powder. If the item is an upholstered chair or sofa, technicians can mix the absorbent powder with a small amount of solvent to create a thin paste. They apply the paste to heavily stained spots and allow it to dry. In these situations, team members use a vacuum to remove the absorbent.
On other porous surfaces, technicians use the absorbent powders with solvents or other cleaners a little differently. For brick, concrete, and marble, they first treat them with the chemical cleaners and then cover the affected surfaces with the absorbent. Once it dries completely, team members vacuum the surface and then follow-up with stiff brushes to remove any trace amounts.
